Long standing cafe and restaurant deep in SJ known for hearty and extremely large portion sizes. Specializes in German American food. Everything made on site. Unique homemade textures and interpretations not available in any chain restaurant. Known for chocolate chip cookies shaped like small scoop of ice cream. The inside is raw dough and the outside is crunchy. Very sweet. Can taste the brown sugar, chocolate chips, butter in each bite. Hard to eat fast. Very rich. Strong Sugar sensation at first bite from the cookie dough and the combination of brown sugar and butter. Then the second sensation hits; a sugary high fructose sensation from the partially melted mini choc chips as they dissolve in mouth. Didn't feel healthy eating them. Kids like it; nothing too sweet for them. Didn't finish cookie. Rawish dough inside near center. Didn't like the rawish dough texture. ~5$ per cookie. Mashed potato with brown gravy: softest melt in mouth MP with slight after taste of melted butter in memory. Delicious. No added cream or milk! Had to ask multiple times. Seems like there is milk or cream in it. Creamy secret is to boil in water for long time. Have no idea what they are talking about. Best MP I have ever had. Full after this side dish. Brown gravy is house made beef stock. Not overly salty like the packaged gravy mixes sold in supermarkets. Macaroni and cheese; melted cheddar cheese and maybe other cheeses on baked into mac. Creamy with slightly hard texture of baked cheddar on boiled mac pasta. Was ok. Not mind blowing like the Mashed potatoes or red cabbage. Red cabbage, rotkohl: sauteed red cabbage, tender and al dente with slight sour taste. Maybe from vinegar. Best Braised cabbage I have ever had. Never had red cabbage sauteed in this method. Delicious. Split between mashed potatoes and this as favorites. Little soupy, maybe added some broth to make it more like braised. Stuffed cabbage rolls: unique blend of sirloin and cabbage leaves. Maybe napa cabbage. Leaves very tender, melt in mouth texture. Sauce delicious. Slightly sweet and sour with some black beans. Best I have ever had. Sirloin in contrast to meat loaf. Not as fatty. Good denser texture. Very filling. The plate is good for 2-3 meals. Difficult if not impossible to finish in 1 sitting. Probably the best stuffed cabbage rolls I have ever had. They grind their own meat mix for the stuffing. Not close to ground hamburger wrapped in cabbage leaves and boiled in tomato sauce. Stuffed cabbage rolls with mashed potatoes and macaroni and cheese. Roughly $33 after tip and tax. Stunningly delicious. Made these before but have never had a version like this. Combination of strong beef flavor and slight sweet sour from sauce. meatloaf: in a mushroom gravy beef broth sauce. Best meatloaf I have had. Has a beefy flavor little similar to the cabbage rolls. Maybe a mix with sirloin in it. Much better than the home recipes with baked ketchup on the top. The glutamates in the mushrooms accentuates the beef flavor. Delicious beefy flavor which you can't get with supermarket ground beef. Their own blend. Much better than the Dittmer's meatloaf blend which tastes salty compared to this. They must have some secret in the blend. Probably not just sirloin beef. Apple Strudel: 10$ per slice. Different than the filo dough pastry textures. Homemade dough which is stronger than filo dough. Apples have slight flavor of lemon. Delicious filling, not mushy like apple pie filling. Can still taste the bite of the apple. Unique. Apple pies take longer to bake, can't get this delicate texture of not overcooked and still al dente. Years of experience to get the strudel to this combination of crust an apple filling. Ordered it to go without the whip cream or any topping. Definitely worth the visit for the strudel alone. The best Apple Strudel I have had. Have no idea how they made the crust so thin and not soggy. Best I have ever had. Took a year to try all the steam table entrees. Everything has a twist to it from years of experience. Can't replicate easily.

Had to make a stop at Gunther's today. The food taste home made and fresh. The waiters and waitres were great. Very helpful and knowledgeable on the food and menus. I had to try the beef stew in a cup and a tri tip sandwich on a fresh sour dough bread. It was delish. Took me to NOM NOM city. The place is not too big. Kind of medium size inside and cozy, on a busy location in mid San Jose. Meridian and Hamilton. The deserts OMG is a whole different splendid experience. Look at the menu's they have and I took one picture of the cakes and cookies they show in a glass cabinet when you enter the facility. I totally love the German theme this place has of the food and decorations in the restaurant. If you want to try something different in your food restaurant. Stop by Gunther's you will be satisfied. I guarantee it.

Had lunch here on a Thursday afternoon. Came for the chocolate chip cookies that were recommended to me, but the breakfast menu items were too tempting to resist, so I ended up having a meal here, then taking some cookies to go. Loved the casual feel inside the restaurant. You order at the front counter and take a number to your table, then they bring it out to you. I stood in line to order for about 3-5 minutes, with just a few customers in front of me, and the wait for my food was about 10 minutes or so, however the cookies were served instantly as they had these ready at the counter. Got the french toast combo (2 slices french toast, with eggs and sausage), 3 of the fresh baked chocolate chip cookies, and a chocolate dipped peanut butter cookie. Everything was yummy, savory perfectly cooked sausage, plain scrambled eggs as requested, fluffy french toast slices that tasted like sourdough and were just uniquely delicious. The two slices were large and filling, and it came with a cup of butter on the side, plus they had sugar free syrup which is a big plus for me. The famous chocolate chip cookies have the sweet taste of raw cookie dough if you like that (though it's not actually raw, it's definitely cooked)... a tad too sweet for me but still good. The chocolate dipped peanut butter cookie was more to my liking, tasty and chocolatey without the feeling of sugar overload. All of the staff here were very friendly and welcoming. And parking wasn't difficult to find in the parking lot out front shared amongst the businesses in the plaza. I'm glad to have discovered this spot, and with such an extensive menu, I'll definitely be back to try more.

I ordered Gunther's for lunch via DoorDash two days in a row and it was excellent both days. The first day I had a Reuben on marble rye with thousand island. Delicious. I also had matzo ball soup, which was quite tasty, and two chocolate chip cookies. I had read that the cookies were not to be missed , and it was true. They're like incredibly soft biscuits, very sweet and thick and buttery. Yum. On the second day I ordered a bagel and lox. It was the best I've had in a long time. The bagel was toasted and wrapped in foil, so it was still hot. The cream cheese, lox, tomatoes, and lettuce came in a clamshell container, so you put it all together yourself. I was happy they included lots of onions because other places usually don't provide enough. It was also nice to be able to choose no capers from the menu-- I'm always picking them off my bagel. The lettuce wasn't what I was expecting, so I didn't eat it. I have plenty of lox and cream cheese left over for another bagel. The menu offers options for what to include and what not to include, which I really appreciate. I wish more restaurants on DoorDash would do that.
